There is a kind of selfishness in this proverb. It is a healthy selfishness. You can take the word another and substitute any number of words and this proverb remains true. For example: What is done for the environment is done for oneself. The simple act of recycling is a selfish act. It is an act that protects our world not just in a global context but also in a community context. It was not that long ago that the highways of our nation were littered with trash. Recycling has done as much as littering fines ever thought of doing to clean up our nation. Today a ride on the highways of the nation can be a very pleasant experience for our families. When we extend a hand and give assistance to one in need we help that person and we bring stability to our own community. When we volunteer at a youth center, church or community organization we add quality to our own lives. How often I have heard the expression from a volunteer: They did more for me then I could ever have done for them. It may not be a selfish question to ask each evening; what have I done for myself today? If your answer includes helping another then you know you have done well.
