From The Pastor February 2012
Choice, not change, determines human destiny.
Anonymous
I have just read the newsletter from another church where the interim minister is asking the congregation to change. Leave the past and change the way they have seen themselves for years. He is making changes in the structure of the worship space and in so many aspects of the life of the congregation.
I have not asked you to make changes. Not many at any rate. I have asked you to honor the past. To respect every minister that has served this congregation for each has left his or her influence on some life within this congregation. We cannot forget our past nor should we forget our past. Even the sad and bad moments of the past have lessons to teach all of us. The good and the pleasant moments, the moments when the love of Christ broke through and lit up the life of this congregation should be honored and respected by all.
I have asked you to look at the choices that you have to make. The hard choices! Some choices will result in change but they will be change from your choice not from my perspective. The choices you make in the months ahead will determine your destiny. By respecting and honoring your past, your strength, your roots, you will produce new fruit and that fruit will be healthy and inviting fruit. Not only will you choose a new minister in the months ahead but also you will have to choose ways to finance your life together so that you do not continue to dip into the investments. You will have to choose ways to incorporate new members into the life of the congregation. You will have to choose ways to interact with the community around you. You will have to choose how and why you will support both local and wider missions. Many, many choices are ahead of you.
Never change for the sake of change. Always choose
